Lefkosi municipality continues to implement a large-scale project to introduce renewable energy sources at wastewater treatment plants in the Haspalat area. An 840 kW solar power plant is being installed on the site, which, after commissioning, will be able to cover about 20% of the station’s electricity needs.

The project is being implemented with the financial support of the European Union and is managed by the UNDP. According to experts, the launch of the solar system will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 830 tons annually, which will make a significant contribution to improving the environmental situation. In addition, its own electricity generation will significantly reduce the operating costs of the enterprise servicing the infrastructure of both parts of the divided capital.

The initiative has not only economic, but also important political and social significance. The Mayor of Lefkosi, Mehmet Harmanji, stressed that the project carries a symbolic message.: The successful cooperation of the two communities of Cyprus in the management of a critically important facility demonstrates the possibility of constructive dialogue even during a period of high levels of distrust in the region.

Special attention was paid to environmental issues during the design of the solar station. The natural lagoons on the territory of the sewage treatment plants will be fully preserved in order to continue to be an important resting and stopping place for migratory birds. Thus, infrastructure development is combined with respect for the environment.

Completion of all works is scheduled for May 2026. The project is expected to be one of the largest public investments in renewable energy in Northern Cyprus in recent years.
