Ersin Tatar, announced that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is open to cooperating with the Greek side on energy issues
President of the TRNC, Ersin Tatar, announced that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is open to cooperating with the Greek side on energy issues and shared use of water supplied from Turkey. He highlighted that such initiatives could strengthen island relations and have a positive impact on Turkish-Greek relations.
Speaking at an event in Turkey commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus operation, Tatar noted that until a final solution to the Cyprus issue is reached, cooperation between the two states on the island remains possible. He mentioned that both sides generate electricity using fossil fuels, and that electrical connections with Turkey could be established through joint projects.
Additionally, Tatar emphasized that the “two-state” policy has been supported by Turkey over the past four years. This approach, he explained, ensures Turkey’s role as a protector of Turkish Cypriots, in contrast to a potential federal agreement under which Ankara might lose influence on the island.
The president also emphasized that Turkish Cypriots are an integral part of the Turkic world and, despite sanctions, continue to contribute to tourism and higher education. Tatar acknowledged the high educational standards and expertise of Cypriots, underlining their potential for strengthening ties with other Turkic countries.
Tatar confirmed that the TRNC is willing to share Turkey’s water supply with the Greek side of Cyprus, taking into account global water resource challenges.
