На Северном Кипру, лагане пластичне кесе биће потпуно укинуте од 2026. године
The authorities of Northern Cyprus have announced a complete ban on the use of lightweight plastic bags, which will come into force on January 1, 2026. Both paid and free shopping bags with a thickness of 15 to 50 microns, widely used in stores and supermarkets, will be subject to restrictions.
The decision was made within the framework of the state environmental policy aimed at reducing environmental pollution and combating microplastics. According to officials, the problem of plastic waste has reached a critical level and requires strict and systematic measures.
Fikri Ataoglu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environmental Protection, said that relevant legislative amendments have already been prepared. The authorities have also developed a step-by-step plan for the transition to environmentally sustainable alternatives, including the use of reusable bags and other nature-friendly solutions.
Information campaigns aimed at raising public awareness are currently being implemented in six districts of Northern Cyprus. As part of these initiatives, residents are being informed of the reasons for the ban and alternatives are being offered, as well as reusable cloth bags are being distributed free of charge.
It is expected that the introduction of the ban will significantly reduce the volume of plastic waste, reduce damage to ecosystems and prevent further accumulation of microplastics in the environment. The authorities emphasize that these measures are aimed at long-term protection of nature and improving the quality of life of future generations.
